ABOUT US

A vision for fostering and coordinating collaboration among
graduate students and graduates conducting subduction zone research

Subduction Zones for Grad Students and Graduates (SZ4Grads) is an emerging, collaborative, and intercultural network for graduate students investigating subduction zone processes. Our group was born in early 2022 with the goal of connecting early-career geoscientists across the world, who will play a vital role in the future of subduction zone science. As the next generation of PIs who will lead the charge in answering the scientific questions surrounding subduction zones, we feel it is our responsibility to create the platform for open discourse, open data, and cross-collaboration in our fields.

VISION

We invite all early-career geoscientists currently studying subduction zones to join SZ4Grads, with a promise of a safe and welcoming space to present, collaborate and discuss their work. We believe that our diversity in background, race, gender, identity, nation, and expertise is our biggest strength to create the scientific community we want and deserve.

EXECUTIVE Committee

Since its inception in 2021, SZ4Grads has developed into a community of several hundred graduate students and graduates across the world, including 10 executive committee members who organize networking events at conferences, plan online webinars, and interface directly with SZ4D to communicate the needs and roles of ECRs in the future of subduction zone science. While the current executive committee US-based, we openly encourage graduate students and graduates from other institutions worldwide to join the executive committee.

  • Does SZ4Grads do research?
No, it is not in our goals to do research as SZ4Grads but to foster collaborations between researchers. If you want to know more about the science go to sz4d.org.
  • What are examples of things that SZ4Grads does?
We do a lot of things! We organize webinars, meet-ups (for example, at conferences), and DEI discussions, and host online discussion platforms. We also communicate early career interests to the SZ4D leadership. If you have more ideas about what we should do, please contact us.
  • How can I participate in SZ4Grads if I don’t live in the US, Chile, or Argentina?
Regarding collaboration and participation, SZ4Grads is for anyone who would like to join. It does not matter where you are from or where you are based! If you are asking about the SZ4D experiment and research, there is a recently funded initiative called SZNet: SZNet is an effort to fund the international collaboration component of the SZ4D vision, with an emphasis on the comparative studies of subduction zones. The SZNet proposal provides resources for community workshops and coordination.
  • Can I join SZ4Grads if I don’t do research directly related to subduction zones (e.g. lab rock experiments, melt production models)?
Of course! Your science and perspectives are welcome and will enrich our community.
  • How do I learn more about SZ4D without having to read the Implementation Plan?
Please visit the SZ4D YouTube channel.
  • Can I attend the meetings or give presentations/seminars if I am not an SZ4Grads member?
Of course! Most of our activities and events are open for anyone to participate in, with some exceptions that are targeted to specific groups.
