SZ4Grads Executive Committee

Since its inception in 2021, SZ4Grads has developed into a community of several hundred graduate students and graduates across the world, including executive committee members who organize networking events at conferences, plan online webinars, and interface directly with SZ4D to communicate the needs and roles of ECRs in the future of subduction zone science. While the current executive committee US-based, we openly encourage graduate students and graduates from other institutions worldwide to join the executive committee.

What does it mean to serve or volunteer on the Executive Committee?

SZ4Grads is a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization that typically asks for just an hour a week (with one-year commitment) to help organize events and contribute to community efforts within SZ4D.

Because with SZ4D’s long-term vision for subduction-zone science, early-career involvement from the very beginning is essential, and that’s exactly where we come in!

Different roles within SZ4Grads Executive Committee (ExComm) include:

  • AndesSur Liason (AndesSur is our sister-ECR group in Chile and Argentina)

    • Foster collaboration and communication with AndesSur

  • Internal Operations

    • Maintain up to date listserv and member lists

    • Communicate with SZ4D Leadership

    • Schedule SZ4Grads ExComm meetings and identify agenda items

  • External Communications (Social Media)

    • Social media: update the BlueSky and Instagram accounts with a variety of content (e.g., Webinar speaker/researcher spotlights, event announcements, etc.)

    • Email listserv biweekly with upcoming events/news/job/research opportunities

  • Conferences & Events

    • Organize and lead early career events at conferences (such as the AGU SZ4Grads Lunch, group outings, early career meet-ups)

    • Assist with planning early career workshops prior to SZ4D conferences/workshops/meetings

    • Liaise with SZ4D leadership regarding funding support for conference events

  • Webinars

    • Decide thematic focus for webinar series

    • Organize webinar including setting dates, times, recruiting presenters, and coordinating with SZ4D leadership as needed

    • Record webinar attendance and ensure webinars are posted to Youtube

    • Advertise webinars with our community

  • Community Engagement / Outreach

    • Actively work to grow the SZ4Grads network (primarily through increasing listserv subscriptions and social media following)

    • Collaborate with External Communication to maintain SZ4Grads website

    • Collaborate with Conference Coordinator to grow SZ4Grads network at relevant events

    • Write SZ4Grads updates for the SZ4D newsletter
